Reviews
“An outstanding work finely created, powerful and dramatic. As is the subject in Greek mythology of three winged goddesses. Alecto, Megaera and Tisiphone, who pursue doers of unavenged crimes…It has colour right where it is required, highlighting the dramatic, which adds to the overall dark structure that works so well. The figures on their horses are quite terrifying; it is a strong and effective work that expresses many deep feelings. Bettina McMahon is a major artist, based on this work.” Review by Robert Kennedy, The 2004 Dobell Prize for Drawing.
“This work is submitted in the works on paper and transcends any limitations. Quite simply we are looking at a masterpiece, a 21st century work that acknowledges our classical past. Brilliant drafting in a sure hand, imaginative realisation and dynamic use of colour. We are in the presence of greatness.” James Deas, Adjudicator, Wyong Shire Festival of Arts, 2005.
IL BARBARESCO
WINNER - ENERGEX EQUINE ART PRIZE 2000 - Part of Queensland Festival of the Horse
Mixed media - pastel, gesso, conte crayon and charcoal on paper, mounted on canvass
“Many of these works are worthy of exhibition anywhere in the world. I congratulate the winner... Bettina McMahon's Il Barbaresco is in my view a worthy victor in this competition. It is a highly evocative painting based on the famous Palio horse race held in Siena, Italy. It combines the dry, hot colours of the region with the mystery and toughness of the event.
Add to this, splendid draftsmanship, placement on the board, and execution and style which all combine to produce a most handsome finish. i pay homage to this painting."
